I meant to take some pictures to show what I've done and have an easier time cataloging how I'm putting together my army. Well, I DID take some pictures, but my iPhone doesn't do more than just show off at how bad it is at being a camera, and I'm still working out my lighting for pictures...so... no pictures.
I'm finding myself just speeding through a lot of the painting, since that's something I can get back to at a later date. I've never had a fully painted army, so this time it'll be different.
Painting log/steps:
- Prime black, and use this as a basecoat for all black/dark surfaces.
- Paint metals in Cold Steel (P3).
- Start base coats on whites. *I find myself doing 5+ white layers and still not getting complete coverage. I need to figure out a faster and easier way. I'll try starting with a darker base and building up to white and see how that works next time.
- Add other colors to the mix as necessary.
- Smoke wash the Cold Steel areas, heavier on dirty metal areas, thinning out the wash to focus on just picking out details.
- Ribbons/banners have been painted white by this point, and I wash with Agrax Earthshade (Citadel).
- Highlight metal areas with Cold Steel, more coverage on cleaner metals, little to no highlights on things like vehicle treads.
- Drybrush ribbons/banners with white / *or highlight white for things like tabards.
That's pretty much it. Anything more than that I'm skipping on vehicles. I write on the rhetoric during the white base coat steps. Depending on the amount of bits added to large surface areas, more or less rhetoric tends to show up. I'm a huge fan of righteous zeal, and it seems the more rhetoric I can add to the models, the more fervent I feel the army comes off as.
To do:
- Complete list/test out base list. I'm toying with the idea of just two biker troop squads with the chapter master on bike, and using the rest of the points to add in other Black Templar friendly units, a la Dreadnaughts, close combat oriented units, etc. Or I may go the other route and add in another bike squad, and demote the fourth squad to flamers. That'd give three units of 5 bikers with x2 grav guns and combi-gravs, and two units of 5 bikers with x2 flamers and combi-flamers. It'd be harsh, but some armies can deal with that. I may want a bit more balance, in either case....I'm probably ditching one of the Thunderfire Cannons. Not sure I need, or want, 2. Especially since they are finecast models. Yuck.
- Bought all the bikes I need (unless I need 5 more for the flamer bike troops)
- Finished buying all the extra bits from ebay lots for the Templars. Should have more than enough for this army and most of another, even if they don't share models (which is unlikely).
- Need to buy a Sternguard kit for the pretty legs, grav guns, combi-weapons, and other nice bits...probably to eventually be used as an Honor Guard unit.
- Send off the armies I sold on Ebay. *I always hear how expensive the hobby is, but I easily made back most of the money I put into my armies when I decided to sell. So...seems like a great investment to me.
I have a 3,000 point game this Saturday, which I will try to do my first battle report with. My camera may suck, but it's definitely better than nothing - maybe it sucks at showcasing models, but it should do fine with some pictures. I want to do solid Battle Reports in the future, if not just for a sort of Black Templar War Journal sort of thing.
