Space Wolves....to Black Templars!

When I first started Warhammer 40k less than a year ago, my first army choice was Space Wolves. I heard about how brutal they were and how great the army was. Space Vikings? Sign me up. After a few months of trying them out, I wasn't satisfied. I switched to Chaos Daemons, hearing from my local gaming store that they had it bad in 6th edition. An army purchase and some flying circus and flesh hounds lists later, I had a lot of wins under my belt. But they were not under-powered in 6th. I started merging in a Chaos Space Marines army into the fold and things just got brutal. Helldrakes, Fateweaver, Flesh Hounds, and a hoard of cultists....things were pretty. Wanting to add in a bit more shooting with a different style than CSM, I started the climb into an Eldar army. I'm a huge fan of Eldar, and 6th has them in a great place. But before I even finished purchasing my first Eldar army list, I made the switch to Space Marines: Black Templars.

But why Black Templars? Well, now that I'm a bit more experienced and capable at building lists, I've realized that my dissatisfaction with my Space Wolves was just in how I played them. I was new to the game and was just spamming Grey Hunters, Rune Priests, and Long Fangs /w missile launchers. While it worked to some degree,  my inexperience was getting the better of me and I wanted to try something new. I had some free time recently to go through the new Space Marine codex and realized at how many different approaches I could have taken with the Space Wolves, including a simple allied force to really fit in more of what I wanted. With Black Templars thrown into the Space Marines codex, the ideas of how I could have played the Space Wolves codex better shifted to my decade old lust to play Black Templars.

Years ago I was introduced to 40k, and I sat around watching 4th edition games and I really wanted to start Black Templars. I bought their softcover codex and sat around my house reading the fluff and really getting into playing the game. But life happened. For about 10 years. When I finally put money down to buy my first army, Black Templars just failed to really come to the fold. They were an old codex, still trying to make it in 6th edition with the codex I had original bought and read through (and lost) so many years before. I just shrugged them off as a bad idea for a first list. Now that I've been able to look through the new Space Marines and see a very refreshed Black Templar concept, I'm ready to plunge right in.

While I still await a Black Templars supplement, as it just seems to make sense to toss one to players since they've always had their own codex, it's nice that I can get into them now - especially since I was in a transition of what to play since I was growing tired of Chaos. I'm very happy with what I see them capable of accomplishing in 6th edition, and with allies in the fold, the possibilities seem endless. My first list concept is in the post below, but I'm already looking forward to other list ideas for once I finish that one up and see how it works out.
